York Building Products has supplied stone, sand, and gravel for nearly ninety years, so changing a core piece of their process was never going to be taken lightly. “We strayed away from something we’d been very comfortable with for a lot of years,” says Neil Seidenstricker, director of operations. “It was a really good decision for us to move to the Superior brand.
In the spring of 2023, York installed its first Patriot® Cone Crushers at one of its key aggregate sites. The decision came after an extensive evaluation period with Kemper Equipment, the dealer that introduced Superior’s crushing line. York had long relied on another manufacturer, but Kemper’s service track record and the Patriot Cone’s performance made the switch “almost a no-brainer,” according to Seidenstricker. “Knowing we were going to get the service and the parts availability we needed—that was very solid,” he said.
The Patriot Cone quickly delivered results beyond expectations. Seidenstricker reports higher throughput than originally projected and far greater ease in achieving precise gradations. Adjusting the closed-side setting now requires only the push of a button, eliminating the old shim-package process and allowing the team to fine-tune product on the fly. “The overall functionality of the crushers is superior—no pun intended,” Seidenstricker says.
Behind those results are several engineering details unique to the Patriot Cone’s design:
- With 40% more clamping pressure than similar models, the machine prevents bowl float and maximizes energy transfer.
- An inverted hydraulic cylinder design shields the piston rod and seal from contamination during operation.
- The countershaft’s counterclockwise rotation allows the chamber to open and relieve stress if clamping pressure is lost.
For York Building Products, these innovations have translated into smoother daily operation and measurable cost savings. “We like the adjustability of the crushers and the ability to hone in our end result,” Seidenstricker explains. “It’s been really good for us on the adjustability part and on overall production.”
As York approaches its 90th anniversary, the move to Superior’s Patriot Cone Crushers represents more than a new machine. It’s a long-term investment in reliability, service, and the ability to meet their growing demand for high-quality aggregate.
