SNOWDONIA, Wales (CBS Newspath/WKRC) – The Welsh countryside offers a wide variety of beautiful sights from rugged peaks to sweeping landscapes.

But from the Deep Sleep Hotel, you’ll see none of that, but that doesn’t make it any less spectacular. In fact, half of the spectacular adventure is the journey you have to take to get there.

Why is all this needed? Well, the journey involves traveling about 1,400 feet underground to the world’s deepest hotel. The hotel is located in the north Wales region of Snowdonia and it takes some serious nerve to get there.

Guests who are brave enough to take on the journey will first descend into dark caverns. After that, they’ll have to navigate flooded tunnels, zip-line across a vast abyss, and squeeze through multiple tight spaces. For more than two centuries, miners worked here extracting slate from Mt. Snowdon.

As a result, a deep, complex maze of tunnels was created deep underground.

“It goes miles that way, and it goes miles that way,” said guide Jeanine Cathrein. “Yeah, it’s a huge place.”

This unique stay first opened in April 2023. It takes roughly four hours to complete the journey to the hotel. But, once you make it, you’ll see it’s well worth the journey.

“Lots of the customers we took on our adventurous trips kept saying to us, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to sleep down here,'” said underground guide and operations manager Mike Morris, according to BBC.

Guests will find a hotel that is equipped with climate-controlled cabins and groundwater that helps generate electricity. There’s Wi-Fi and a bathroom, running water comes from a spring, but there’s no shower. Dinner gets delivered in a pouch.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” guest Sam Frith added.

The price tag to stay in a cabin for two at the Deep Sleep Hotel is about $500 a night.
